My Bearded Baby Brother

Posted in Uncategorized by brandonirby on November 25, 2008

This past weekend was spent with my brother Grant as part of his birthday celebration.
We went longboarding, viewed Eagle Eye, drank amazing coffee, danced a jig (more to come), had a mini photoshoot & saw VEDERA live at the Conservatory.

It was a great weekend.
Get ready for a dance blog post in the near future!

Blind to Our Own Addiction

Posted in thoughts by brandonirby on November 18, 2008

I found this video via one of my blog subscriptions.
The individual posted this video simply drew mention to the fact that in the future with his two daughters this is what will be in store.

Might I add this blogger is a Christian as are most of his readers.
Their response was along the lines of:

“This is hilarious”
“I’m glad I have boys”

My response?
Sick.

To me this is a prime example of how addicted we are to media and popluar culture. Not to mention how poorly the television set functions as a baby sitter. That which is readily available to children often teaches them how to be a person, or more specifically how to be a guy or a girl. It educates them as to what is acceptable and what is considered normal. I find it a tragedy that children are bombarded by advertisements that educate them briefly above and beyond what they learn from the regular programing.

Media and entertainment are not in and of themselves wrong. However, what is being created as “entertainment” is largely garbage.

In a decade where technology allows anyone with a video camera to create, inform and entertain I’m puzzeled as to why there is a void in created content being organized online. We can narrate life as it occurs, we can influence the “masses” we can create quality. I’m fed up with how mindless our mediocre entertainment continues to be.

I’m encouraged by those like Phil Vischer who is spearheading projects like this.

I’m still a happy person, this youtube video just completely sucker punched me in the gut.

Your thoughts?

One day it begins. It just happens to be Monday

Once again I’m awake far too late.
Today I started what I honestly believe to be a lifestyle change in the like of my dietary habits.
Its a challenge especially when you forget to set your alarm and have to get through the shower and to your 8:oo class in fifteen minutes.

Its a wonder I woke up before class.

I returned from class to find this appropriate blog post from Seth Godin.

After reading I didn’t think twice.

I’ve cultivated horrible habits when it comes to nourishment. In breaking those habits I’ve decided to make a list of why I shouldn’t indulge when I feel the “need” to cave. So far I’ve had need to come up with three reasons:

1. My heart is beautiful, it should continue pumping
2. You’re not hungry, you are just bored.
3. Don’t you want to strut a speedo come swimsuit season?

The last one happens to be my favorite.

Obama, You Tube, Technology & Change

Posted in thoughts by brandonirby on November 14, 2008

In case you haven’t heard, Obama is recreating the Fireside Chat by means of You Tube.

To me, this is brilliant as was his campaign which was driven quite artistically and appropriately for today’s media saturated culture. The change I’m encouraged by is not the change of which Obama speaks. However it is the change that is taking place among the great divide of creativity, technology & culture.

Advances such as You Tube have paved the way for much leverage on many levels.
The more grass roots the internet becomes, the more excitement rushes through my veins particularly in light of projects such as this.

As time moves on it is my hope to blog about media & it’s possibilities for leverage.
